NY STAR Checks: Who’s Getting School Property Tax Relief and When

NY STAR checks are on the way for millions of New York homeowners, bringing much-needed school property tax relief. The School Tax Relief (STAR) program is set to distribute $2.2 billion in benefits this summer and fall, helping nearly 3 million residents save on school property taxes. If you’re wondering when your NY STAR check will arrive and how much you’ll get, here’s the full breakdown.

When to Expect Your NY STAR Check

If you qualify for the STAR exemption, the savings will appear directly on your tax bill—some residents have already seen it. Those signed up for the STAR Credit or Direct Deposit will receive their NY STAR checks based on their county’s school tax due dates.

Homeowners in New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse should have received their benefit between late June and mid-July. Others across the state will get their NY STAR checks by the end of the year.

How Much Will You Get?

The amount of your NY STAR check depends on local school tax rates and your eligibility type. Here’s an overview:

Region Total STAR Benefits 2025
Long Island $698.4 million
Mid-Hudson $488.5 million
Finger Lakes $205.2 million
Western NY $178.5 million
New York City $158.6 million
Capital Region $144.5 million
Central NY $131.1 million
Southern Tier $109.6 million
Mohawk Valley $66.3 million
North Country $47.2 million

Most eligible homeowners will receive $350–$600, while seniors with Enhanced STAR can expect $700–$1,500.

Do You Qualify for NY STAR Checks?

You may qualify if you:

  • Own a primary residence in New York.
  • Have a household income of $500,000 or less for STAR credit ($250,000 or less for exemption).
  • Are 65+ with income under $107,300 for Enhanced STAR.

New homeowners receive a check instead of an exemption. You can also switch from exemption to check, which may increase the benefit annually by up to 2%.

With NY STAR checks, thousands of dollars in school property tax relief are just around the corner for millions of New Yorkers.
